Saturday at Red Elephant Inn

North Conway, NH - After I picked up the plants at the Notchland Inn, visited with Dory Gray, and went to the liquor store for a "scotch" run, I spent the afternoon and night with Tana and Nelson Hall (Red Elephant Inn, http://www.redelephantinn.com/). The Halls (displaced Texans) were my 'back door' neighbors when I owned the Eastman Inn. While Nelson appears to be really quiet and reserved (you've gotta watch those quiet types), Tana is exactly the opposite! And, I'd always wondered how she kept her jewelry so organized. . .well, I could not believe the size of her closets - you could fit a small village in there!!!! She has hangers, containers, drawers, pegs, and you name it, to hold the jewelry!!! She could just open the side door and have a retail space!

I met former guests, Audrey and Chris, at Horsefeathers for cocktails. They were eight and a half months pregnant when they were guests of ours (Tom and me) for the first time. This weekend celebrated their seventh annual visit to the Eastman Inn. They have promised me pictures of them on the porch this year.

Tana and I had dinner at Tuckerman's Tavern after cocktails. Then, home to the inn for a restful night in a beautiful room named "Desert Camel."

Sunday morning, Tana and I had coffee at "0 dark thirty" before I hit the road for a LONG drive home.

Visit to Mt. Sisson

Jackson, NH - After lunch at May Kelly's, I visited with my dear friends, Barbara and Bob Sisson, at their home on "Mt. Sisson." I affectionately (and exhaustedly) refer to their home as Mt. Sisson because you have to climb at least a bazillion steps from the base of their yard to the entrance to the house and then another flight of stairs to the main level of their A-frame!!! No wonder these two folks stay in such good shape. I have to pant for about a half hour just to catch my breath!

We spent the afternoon together, shared new recipes, had cocktails and new cheese samples before going to Bellini's restaurant for dinner. Then it was back home to watch some foodie shows on HGTV.

Saturday morning, we went to Yesterday's restaurant in Jackson, NH, for breakfast. Yum-oh . . . pumpkin pecan bread that was toasted!!!! While Barbara and Bob were courageous enough to have eggs (y'all know how much I love eggs - NOT!!!), I restrained myself to the toast and bacon.

Barbara and I talk on the phone almost every day . . . Dory frequently asks what we talk about . . . it's hard to say, but, Barbara is as close as a sister to me and it's really, really easy to do!

Red Hat Honeys at May Kelly's Cottage

North Conway, NH - The primary purpose of this New Hampshire trip was to drive the truck, aka Fiona, home and pick-up the orchids and Christmas cactus plants that the Notchland folks have been babysitting. But . . . I also got to have lunch at May Kelly's Cottage with some of my former Red Hat Honeys of Mt. Washington Valley.

I was joined by (from left to right) Judith Barry, Moo Bennett, Ruth Sousa, Pat Grady, (me) Suzanne Androvette, Dory Gray . Lots of good visiting and sharing stories that can (and CANNOT) be repeated. These women have been wonderful friends since I formed the chapter in 2002 and are regular email buddies of mine. What a treasure they are!!!

Trip to New Hampshire and the Notchland Inn

New Cumberland, PA - Iris Cecovick, one of my new friends, and Beau's sitter, took me to the Harrisburg airport for my quick trip to New Hampshire. We took the Pennsylvania Turnpike - just one exit from New Cumberland - across the bridge with views of Three Mile Island. The total air time was only an hour and a half, but, I had a two hour layover in Philly. Easy, easy, easy for those who want to visit me and use air transportation.

Ed Butler and Philip Sapiera picked me up in Manchester, NH, and, we had lots and lots to talk about. I stayed at the Notchland Inn (http://www.notchlandinn.com) on Wednesday and Thursday night. Wednesday night, I was joined by Philip and his partner, Jim Golden (a good ole Mississippi boy who attended Millsaps College)(Jim and Philip have been friends of Les and Ed for about 30 years); Les Schoof; and Steve (the speaker for Eggs and Issues). Had a wonderful dinner prepared by the chef, Sandy Reinschmidt. Jim and I shared Mississippi stories and tried to see who could out-'drawl' the other!!!

Thursday, I had lunch with Sherry Brault (Assistant Innkeeper, Eastman Inn), Tana Hall (Owner, Red Elephant Inn), Craig Cox (Owner, Riverbend Inn); and Linda Trask and Mitch Scher (Owners, Glen Oaks Inn) at the Thompson House Eatery in Jackson, NH. We had a good visit, talked a little innkeeping stuff, and laughed a lot. The food was wonderful, served to us by Tam, and prepared by Leslie Fletcher and Larry Baima.

Thursday night we (Les, Ed, Jim, Philip, and I) attended a performance of Melissa Manchester at the Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield, Maine. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful evening!!!! Miz Manchester provided a great selection of songs and was accompanied by a multi-talented musician who played keyboard, guitar, drums, and sang harmony - frequently, three instruments at the same time!!!!

Breakfast on Thursday and Friday was with my friend, Kath Harris. You have to appreciate that Kath is NOT a morning person . . . so, this was a real sacrifice on her part!!!! We are quilting buddies (and Red Hatters) who have more 'head quilts' than we'll ever be able to finish!!!
